We wish you a Merry Chrismas!

Today, as a Christmas treat, lots of students came together to sing some Christmas Carols for the rest of the school. The Christmas songs we sang were: "Jingle Bells",  "We wish you a Merry Christmas", and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". Here are the lyrics for the song "We wish you a Merry Christmas"

We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a merry Christmas,
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy new year.

Glad tidings we bring,
To you and your kin,
Good tidings for Christmas
And a happy new year.

Oh bring us a figgy pudding,
Oh bring us a figgy pudding,
Oh bring us a figgy pudding,
And a cup of good cheer.

We wish you a merry Christmas,
We wish you a merry Christmas,
We wish you a merry Christmas,
And a happy new year!

Christmas is often a time to spend with your family and to enjoy delicious food, typical of the season.
Here are some pictures of popular ´Christmas foods´ in the UK.

Dashing through the snow...

This week in school, we have started to learn some English Christmas Carols (villancicos).
Christmas carols are traditional songs, which people sing at Christmastime (la epoca navideña) and they usually have a religious, Christmas, or wintertime theme.
Here are the words to one of the Christmas songs we have learned:

JINGLE BELLS

Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh,
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way.
Bells on bobtails ring,
Making spirits bright.
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight.

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way.
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way.
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.

Christmastime is a time when people get together with their friends and family, to Eat, Drink and be Merry(feliz)! The most celebrated day in the UK is December 25th, Christmas Day. Children get up early to open presents brought to them by Father Christmas (papa noel) and families get together to eat ´Christmas dinner´.

Chrismas dinner usually consists of roast turkey, roast potatoes, brussel sprouts (repollitos de Bruselas), mashed potatoes (pure de patatas), small sausages cranberry sauce and gravy.
After Christmas dinner, some people watch the Queen of England give her Christmas message on the television. The Queen´s speech is always at 3pm on Christmas Day.

Christmas is coming...

Today is the 1st of December and so we are now in advent (el adviento), the period leading up to Christmas.
In the United Kingdom, as well as in some other countries, the main celebrations for Christmas take place on the 25th December. Advent calendars (calendarios del adviento/de la navidad) are very popular with lots of children and are used to count down the days before christmas. For every day in December, children have to open a ´window´ of their calendar and behind each window, they find a christmas picture, or a chocolate!

The advent calendar is said to have originally been a German invention but is now poular in many countries all over the world.

This Giant advent calendar in Friedrichsfehn, Germany, was the biggest of it´s kind back in 1998!

Next week, in school we will start learning some Christmas songs and Christmas carols (villancicos), in English!

Language in short film

Last week, some students took the opportunity to view some English film ´shorts´, at the film festival which took place at the Teatro Salon Cervantes, in Alcala de Henares.
The aim of the programme of ´language in short film´(idiomas en corto),  is to "...provide the opportunity to increase your knowledge of the chosen language by listening and reading the subtitles in the same language"
The films dealt with some interesting themes and the students who took part in the trip, enjoyed the experience.

The short films we watched were as follows:
  • Gentleman In Squalor
  • Every Good Boy Does Fine
  • Junk
  • The Third One This Week
  • Little Brother
  • The Road Home
      ´Gentlemen in Squalor´

            ´The Road Home´

This link shows a preview of the film "Every Good Boy Does Fine", which proved to be a favourite among the students of San Isidro.

Here is a link to an interview with the the creator of another of the short films, ´The Road Home´. The filmmaker describes the film as being ¨somewhat autobiographical" Why not take a look to learn more about the film and the thinking behind it?

Hello Again! We're back with new enthusiasm and ideas!

Hello and welcome to the first blog of this term! We have returned with lots of new ideas, activities and information for the year ahead.
This week at San Isidro we have been learning about and celebrating, the festival of Hallowe'en!
We have been carrying out different activities in class, as well as hosting a pumpkin carving competition.
Take a look at some of the fantastic 'Jack-O-Lanterns' that our students have created.
It's really simple to carve a pumpkin - why not have a look at our instructions and try to make your very own 'Jack-O-Lantern'?
  • Remove (cut open) the top part of the pumpkin with a sharp knife, keeping the knife tilted/on a slant.
  • Take/Scoop out the pips and the pumpkin flesh from inside.
  • Using a marker, mark out the eyes and the mouth.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut along the outline and push the pieces of pumpkin inside.
  • Place a candle inside the pumpkin.
We will print the name of the winner of the contest, next week in the blog!

This week we have been learning about some of the traditions and activities that take place on Hallowe'en.
Here are a few of the basic facts:
  • Hallowe'en is celebrated on the 31st October
  • The name 'Hallowe'en' orginates from 'All Hallows Eve' - The night before All Saints Day
  • Activities such as 'trick-or-treating' and 'bobbing for apples', are very popular with children at Hallowe'en
  • People often get dressed up in scary costumes, such as wiches and monsters and attend Hallowe'en parties
  • Toffee Apples are a tasty Hallowe'en treat!

                                         HAPPY HALLOWE’EN!

Here is a scary story, written by Horas Pop, 4 SSEE, especially for hallowe'en!:

THE INCIDENT FIELD.
One day a family decided to travel to a camp in Texas for five days. John, the head of the family, Emily his wife and their children, Mike and Steve. Mike was 12 years old and Steve only 8 years old.
That same day the family arrived in Texas, the place was full of corn fields all around the old house. John didn’t like that place but he had to be content with it. When evening came the wind began to blow very hard and increasingly, they began to hear frightening noises.
John was sleeping until he heard the front door being closed. He thought that was impossible and he decided to go downstairs to see what the problem was. He didn’t see anything but…When he go upstairs he saw something horrible.
He saw his wife without a head and she had a note that said: ‘’Hi John, go upstairs and visit your children’’.
He was confused and very scared; when he went upstairs he saw Mike had no skin and Steve no eyes or arms. But he saw another note. This was written with blood on the wall, saying: ‘’ John you are the next one ‘’.
John was desperate, he had lost his family but he was determined to find the ‘assassin’. He took his shotgun and he went to search for that guy. When he heard something move around him in the corn field, he shot in all directions until he was out of ammo.
But in a few seconds something got him by his neck and pulled his head and threw it on the floor.
The police never founded that terrible guy.
Remember, lonely houses in the middle of the field never are safe, so keep out of these places.
THE END.

ST PATRICK IS CELEBRATED ON 17TH EACH YEAR.

WHO WAS SAINT PATRICK?

Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland as he was the one who brought
Christianity to the Irish.
According to legend, Saint Patrick used a shamrock to explain about God.  The shamrock, which looks like clover, has three leaves on each stem.  Saint Patrick told the people that the shamrock was like the idea of the Trinity – that in the one God there are three divine beings:  the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

HOW TO CELEBRATE ST PATRICK'S DAY?

We all know some ways to celebrate St Patrick, like wear green, drink green beer, eat Irish stew... but there are many more. Watch this video and you'll find out!

HAVE A GREAT ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!!

Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day)
In the UK it is the last Tuesday before Lent (time of abstinence, of giving things up); so it is the last chance to indulge yourself, and eat all that food that you aren't allowed to eat in Lent. Pancake are eaten because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent.

OFFICIAL LANGUAGES IN IRELAND:
There are two main languages used in Ireland.

Irish (Gaeilge) is a Celtic language historically spoken by the Irish people in Ireland. Irish is now spoken as a first language only by a small minority of the Irish population, and as a second language by a larger minority. However, it is widely considered to be an important part of the island's culture and heritage. Under the British  rule Irish was forbidden, but in the last century it has been taught in all the schools in the country.

Irish language

Irish English is the variety of English which is spoken in Ireland. English became an official language under the British rule and it is the language most of the Irish speak every day.
Under Bunreacht na hÉireann, the Irish constitution, both English and Irish have official status, with Irish being the national and first official language.

IRISH SYMBOLS:

The Irish Flag: the Tricolour

The Irish Flag has three vertical strips of green, white and orange and was first used in 1848. It's colours held important significance for the political situation in Ireland at the time. The green represented the Catholic majority while the orange was the colour of the Protestant population. The middle stripe of white symbolised a hope of peace or unity between the two.

The Shamrock

Simply put, a shamrock is a single-stemmed plant with three leaves growing from that single stem. It grows in quantity on the hills of Ireland. More importantly, it has become a kind of unofficial symbol of Ireland, featured on postcards and souvenirs.
It was probably made most famous by St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland. He used the shamrock to help explain the mystery of the Holy Trinity to the pagans, in his quest to bring Christianity to the country. Today, it remains a strong symbol of his life in our yearly St. Patrick's Day celebrations, on the 17th of March. Most Irish people will wear a small quantity of shamrock on that day and many will engage in the time-honored tradition of "drowning the shamrock" - taking a few drinks (preferably Guinness) in the local pub.

The Celtic Cross

This large cross is a mixture of the traditional Christian cross and the pagan worship of the sun. Each cross is intricately carved with images from the Bible and Celtic symbols like knots and spirals.

The Leprechaun

Th legend of the leprechaun has never quite left Ireland. Traditionally dressed in green with a cocked hat and leather apron, he is about 2 feet tall and possesses a pot of gold. If you can find a leprechaun and keep him in your sight he must tell you where the gold is. While many have claimed to see a leprechaun (usually after a long day in the pub!) his existence has yet to be proven.

The Harp

The harp has long been the traditional symbol of Ireland. The musicians of ancient chieftains played the harp and today we'll see it on coins, the presidential flag, uniforms, state seals and so on. The Celtic harp is said to stand for immortality of the soul.
The Claddagh Ring
Claddagh

Probably the most famous of Irish jewellery, the Claddagh ring has a long and rich history. Earliest examples of the ring date back to the 1700s and link the ring to the ancient fishing village of Claddagh just outside the walls of the City of Galway.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: History

  • 1845: Start of the Great Famine of the 1840s, which kills at least 1 million people. People begin to emigrate to America, Britain Australia, and Canada.

  • 1916: A rebellion breaks out in Dublin against British rule. It is crushed, but it makes more people rise up against British rule. Easter Rising 1916.

  • 1920s; War breaks out, which results in the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921. This parts the island. But people want it completely free, so the Civil War starts.

  • 1947: Republic of Ireland (Eire) is created, and Ireland breaks away from the Commonwealth. Ulster is not included, which annoys many Irish nationalists, especially the IRA.

  •
A map of Ireland showing traditional county borders and names with Northern Ireland counties colored tan, all other counties colored green
A map of the 32 traditional counties of Ireland, showing the 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland (dark green) and the 6 counties of Northern Ireland (light green).

1969: First sign of trouble in Northern Ireland that is included in what is known as the Troubles. This is caused by the difference in religion in Ireland, between Catholicism and Protestantism.

This poem was written by one of the 10 year-old student in Gaelscoil Bheanntraí (the school where I taught Spanish in 2001). It shows how Irish people felt the division of their country and the differences marked by religion.

  • 1969-1998: Troubles tear Northern Ireland apart. Many outbreaks occur in towns and cities across Northern Ireland, including Bloody Sunday, Derry 1972, and Omagh 1998.

  • 1998: The Belfast Agreement is made, which results in an end to the War in Northern Ireland. Ireland and the UK work together to towards the end of the century.

  • Peace in Ireland.

ST VALENTINE'S DAY IS COMING!! 7 days left!

When My Love Swears That She Is Made Of Truth
    Sonnet 138 by William Shakespeare
When my love swears that she is made of truth,
I do believe her though I know she lies,
That she might think me some untutored youth,
Unlearned in the world's false subtleties.
Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young,
Although she knows my days are past the best,
Simply I credit her false-speaking tongue:
On both sides thus is simple truth suppressed:
But wherefore says she not she is unjust?
And wherefore say not I that I am old?
O! love's best habit is in seeming trust,
And age in love, loves not to have years told:
Therefore I lie with her, and she with me,
And in our faults by lies we flattered be.
